cfoam ® || 254 is just one example of the advanced materials CONSOL Innovations is developing to leverage the properties of coal to meet the needs of future-facing applications. An ideal material for aerospace tooling, CFOAM can be easily machined into complex shapes and has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE)—like monolithic graphite and invar, both of which cost much more—that matches the CTE of the carbon fiber parts molded and cured using CFOAM.
CFOAM also exhibits an attractive combination of properties–including low density, heat and fire resistance, corrosion resistance, high strength-to-weight ratio, and electromagnetic shielding capabilities—that make it suitable for a range of applications in aerospace, military, and other industrial and commercial product markets. Today, certain components of some of our highest-performance aircraft and spacecraft are made using CFOAM tools made from coal.

By combining coal by-products with recycled plastics, we are developing processes to manufacture high-performance, low-cost, and aesthetically pleasing building products such as coal plastic composite decking. These products offer an improved sustainability profile compared to traditional materials like pressure-treated lumber, while still meeting all international building codes.
Carbon Management Technologies
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS)—plus new methane reduction technologies—are ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
